Photography Meetup: Shooting With Intention

Photography Meetup: Shooting With Intention

Saturday 02 March
Harrison Twp - 2pm - 2 Hours
Detroit Photography Group
Sean Brady
Why are we taking the image, would we want to print this and hang it on the wall? That is the aim of this course. Learning to take pictures that avoid cliches such as a spinning Ferris wheel, sunsets, sunrise, signs, and pets. The most famous photographer Ansel Adams shot in grayscale using a zone system and lived very close to Yellowstone. Dorothy Lang would pull over to take her grayscale image after talking to the displaced families of the Dust Bowl. Henri Cartier Benson would walk the streets early in the morning to get his grayscale images. Lewis Hine would have himself, and his camera smashed to get grayscale images, that helped end child labor in America. And while color photography was most likely not an option. These photographers could not really on sunrise or set, or the colors of fall, they all had a motivation and intention, and that is what this course aims to provide.

Note: you will be able to take images in color if desired.

The lighthouse is a scaled replica of a lighthouse on the east coast. Discovery Channel did a feature about this replica. It?s next door to me so it gets featured in a majority of my sunrise photos.

Title or Location: Toledo Speedway Bmx
A group of BMX'ers were having a tournament at the Toledo Speedway. Knowing that it takes practice, I was quite impressed with intricate maneuvers and skill of these young boys (and girls) at the event. This particular youngster flew down the ramp, rounded the corners of the track and set himself up with good momentum to get some airtime when he hit the bank. I had mentally composed a shot and after waiting was finally able to capture a good mid-air shot with the sun setting in the background.

Title or Location: Maumee - Side Cut Park
Being that the Maumee River is the largest river basin in all the great lakes, the waterway itself and its interconnecting bridges hold much significance. Bridges are a mammoth civil engineering undertaking. The bridge is well designed but does not take away from the natural aesthetics of the region.

Title or Location: American Kestrel at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy
First off, I have to say that I am not a "Birder". But I love challenging my photographic skills and abilities. The American Kestrel is not a big bird, and it is fast. So even when you know its takeoff is imminent, it is still hard to get a nice clear photo of the bird. This particular image was shot with a Canon R6 camera, with the RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM lens at 1/5000 sec, f/7.1 and ISO 4000. I used the animal eye-tracking feature of this mirrorless full frame camera, and was very plea

Title or Location: Horseshow Bend in Page, AZ
I had shot the sunrise at Horseshoe Bend the same morning and was hoping for a blazing sunset at this location after talking to the other photographers present at sunrise. Even with some clouds, we were not so fortunate and when the sunlight was casting on the water I switched to black and white mentality and was able to capture this photo. You can just see the setting sun in the upper right corner for the photo.

Title or Location: Nene Valley Railway - Wansford
I was on a leisurely family walk going towards Nene Valley Railway in Wansford when serendipity struck, and I found myself in the perfect spot to capture a captivating moment. The sight of a steam train preparing to depart from the station sparked a rush of excitement and nostalgia. The timeless allure of steam trains and the bustling atmosphere of the railway added a touch of history and charm to my photography experience.

It was a cloudy day and my cat was up in the tree. he had always had very deep blue, but with all the defused light from the clouds and the contrast from the tree bark, It sent me running for my camera.I shot it on a Nikon D5600, with a 70 - 200mm lens, on January 25, 2024.I shot it raw while in manual mode, the aperture was 4.1, the iso 100, and the shutter speed was 1 over 700.

Title or Location: Three Cliffs Bay, The Gower, Swansea
This one took a bit of planning to catch the Milky Way in the place I wanted, the Weather, Moon, and Milky Way core all had to be right and as you might guess it took a few seasons for it to come together, every time it was a walk in the dark over the sand dunes from Pennard to get to the right spot on the cliff edge, I'm a little picky when it comes to star trails and although there are certain formulas for shutter speed to "visibly" limit star trails I'd rather have none, so I dragged my Star
